My 'Hood

A couple shots I took in my neighborhood. When I first informed family and friends that I was moving to west philadelphia a lot of smirks, furried eyebrows and discreet side-eyes were directed my way. And I can't lie, the congested streets and littered neighborhoods of philadelphia are a far cry from the suburban, upper class northern virginia communities I had grown used to. I became a little weary of my new home in university city, the "college town" of philly that Penn and Drexel inhabit. It was loud and congested and I craved peace and seclusion. I hadn't gotten accustomed to philly drivers, who have all apparently boycotted the turning signal, and parking was a daily 5-10 minute ordeal.

To my dismay my basement apartment had few windows and was infested with mice and I began to wonder if I was really up for the city life -something I had always longed for- but after a quick move to a more open space (and an investment in a year supply of riddex pulse), I slowly grew to love my new surroundings, where college dorms and frat houses begin to give way to corner stores and section-eight housing. Do not go past 52nd street is what my leasing agent advised me, so I pretty much do all my wanderings between center city and my apartment. No problems so far, maybe partly due to penn security, who meander the neighborhood on bikes in bright yellow jackets and are always willing to offer a friendly hello. I feel pretty safe here.

There's a lot to admire about university city, but what I think I love most about this area is the diversity. I'm walking distance to a multitude of ethnic restaurants and cafes (Philly is extremely vegan friendly-a huge plus), art galleries, several community gardens, two parks, a co-op, thrift stores, a movie theatre and World Cafe (where I saw Alice Smith perform), just to name a few. It's literally impossible to get bored here. The people that make up this neighborhood are just as heterogenous. Hipsters, devout muslims, soccer moms, college students and junkies are all living harmoniously in this quaint neighborhood. I can't imagine being anywhere else right now.

P.S. West Philly is a street style haven, but I'm still working on putting my timidness aside to approach unsuspecting subjects for photo ops, so stay tuned for my efforts!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

The Sartorialist Posters

The Sartorialist Scott Schuman is such an inspiration to me. His pictures are clear and captivating. He has a talent for scouring the most intriguing subjects for his photos amidst the fashion assembly that is New York. I'm so excited to see that he's selling some of his prints, at a pretty reasonable price might I add, on net-a-porter for $40 a pop. I hope he signs them!

His photography book, The Sartorialist: Closer, is a coffee table must have for photogra-lovers like myself. I spent a good 30 minutes flipping through the pages at Barnes & Nobles, impressed by the photos and enjoyed the short narratives that accompanied them. You can get your copy here.

Currently

A couple things I'm currently carrying around:

1. My handy dandy backpack. I love the leopard print detail on the front flap.  Plus it's nice and roomy
inside. I use it as camera bag, overnight bag, laptop bag, all that.  Essential.
2. Understanding The Purpose and Power of Woman by Dr. Myles Monroe. An awesome book
explaining why men and woman are different but equal, and how we can compliment each other.
3. Issue 16 of Arise, one of my favorite magazines of all time. Chock full of great editorials and stories.
4. The Best American Travel Writing 2011 edited by Sloane Crosley.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Ocean City Travel Diary, con't...

Part deux as promised! Most of these pictures were taken on my android phone. I really wanted to highlight Serendipity Bed and Breakast where I stayed, in which I found an awesome deal on Living Social, as stated before. Karen, the "madame of the house" I'll call her, did an amazing job catering to my mostly vegan diet. The room I stayed in was cozy and humble.

I've always loved this little poem. When I saw this hanging in the bedroom I knew I had picked the right place.

I always have a stack of something on my wrist. The believe bracelet will be in our shop soon. The other two are vintage.

There was a corvette show going on the day I arrived which was pretty cool.

Infamous bathroom shot.

Fresh fruit and a dairy free muffin which was delicious.

A yummy tofu scramble with toast, peppermint tea and orange juice.

I'm already longing for the sun in my face, alone time with the Lord with no distractions and boardwalk food. And it's only been a week since I've been back.

The Marants

So I'm drooling over a Sincerly Jules outfit post which gets heightened when I see she's wearing a pair of shoes that have literally transported themselves from the recesses of my tennis shoe dreaming mind and onto her feet. On a daily basis I'm definitely a t-shirt, jeans and flats kind of girl, although I do like spicing that up with cool accessories that mark my personal style, and these shoes have my name alll over them! Classic shape, nude, nice play with fabric (leather + suede) and right on trend. As I eagerly scroll to the end of the post to get the deets, my heart sink when I see beauties are designed by blogger favorite Isabel Marant, which only means one thing: it's gonna have an incredibly overinflated price tag. Isabel Marant did not disappoint. These shoes cost $655!!! Like what? Are they hand-made or something??? Now I'm not one to turn to knockoffs, I love supporting the original designer, but not when said designer is shamelessly over-charging for factory-made, mass produced merchandise. I can wait for Aldo and Steve Madden to reproduce the look-a-likes for all that.

What do you guys think about overpriced footwear? Are these worth the cost?

New single by Solange: "Losing You"

The teaser:

And the video:

New single "Losing You" by Solange Knowles. Serious girl crush on this chick! The video was shot in Cape Town, South Africa and directed by Melina Matsoukas. Amazing styling by Ty Hunter (loving the mixed prints and pant suits!).
Visual and auditory stimulation. It doesn't get any better than that folks!

Some shots from the video below.

New York Street Style

I had the opportunity to shoot some street style pics during New York Fashion Week. So much fun! Met a few of my favorite fashion bloggers, although I did feel a little papparazzi-ish at times. Street style photography is something I've really been getting into and a great way to develop my photography  (read: and social) skills. Here are some of my favorites, recognize anyone?

Breaking Lightbulbs

My boyfriend and I working on a banner for his blog (I love taking pictures of him, although he usually shies away). Check the final result here.

Central Parkin' It

This is me. On top of a mountain (in my Anchorman voice).
Nah actually this is me in Central Park a couple weeks ago. For more pics and outfit details click here.
